Gastroschisis

Gastroschisis

Gastroschisis is disruption of the fetal anterior abdominal wall due to ischemia.

  • There is herniation of the small intestine into the amniotic sac with lack of peritoneal or skin covering.
  • Umbilical cord insertion is normal and is away from the mass and this differentiates it from exomphalos where the cord is inserted on the herniated mass.
  • Herniation of the fetal liver through the anterior wall defect plus associated late onset polyhydramnios.
